| Municipal GIS Online – FAQ |
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is included with our yearly subscription fee?
With a yearly subscription to our online web GIS service, your town
receives a directory on our online server and your own feature-packed,
easy to use web GIS application. Usually there are no setup costs and you
may update your data as often as you like.
What if we don’t have GIS data?
The core of any municipal GIS is a parcel layer that shows town property
boundary lines. If you do not yet have a GIS parcel layer, please contact
us for a low price estimate to have one developed. With certain hosting
plans or software purchases, we will develop your parcel layer for you at
little or no cost. This must be the best deal in small town GIS!
Is web GIS right for our town or county?
The case for GIS is an easy one, and this is why you’re hearing about GIS
from your neighboring towns. Numerous case studies show that GIS offers a
time and price cost savings on multiple fronts. If the budget is there
(and with our solution it can be!) we’re confident that GIS is right for
you.
What if we already have web GIS?
We feel our solution can co-exist with an existing system and provides
immediate access to GIS for the casual user. Furthermore, our online
system provides the added security of an off-site emergency backup should
your own network be compromised. In the event of an emergency or natural
disaster, our servers remain online to meet critical needs.
Is offsite hosting secure?
Offsite hosting is more secure. We maintain multiple servers, each an
exact copy and separated by thousands of miles. In the event of a natural
disaster in your area or should your own network become compromised our
servers remain online.
Town, fire, police, and emergency personnel will have access to vital town
data and maps from any location with internet access. With increased
wireless internet availability, access can often be obtained in the field
with a laptop computer or handheld PDA device.
Can MainStreetGIS provide custom versions or additional town maps?
Our online interface provides an excellent platform on which to build
custom interactive maps. We are happy to provide additional online GIS
maps derived from any spatial data that is relevant to your town – Zoning
Maps, Overlay Districts, Utilities, Watersheds, FEMA, etc. The cost for
additional maps varies, so please contact us for a price quote.
What types of GIS data can be used?
Our online system is compatible with almost all standard GIS formats and
raster images. If necessary, we can convert your data to a usable format
before it is uploaded to our servers. Please contact us with any specific
data concerns. Is personal privacy a concern?
Privacy laws vary and you will need to decide what is right for your town.
To help with this, we can limit the types of searches and data results
that are accessible online. If you have citizens with specific concerns,
we will block their property record from our database before it goes
online. All you need to do is submit a list of the properties you would
like to restrict.
How often can we update our data?
Our online GIS application can be updated with new data as often as
desired. Most towns choose a quarterly update schedule to coincide with
their quarterly parcel updates. Depending on your town and state laws, you
may wish to provide data that is updated with each calendar year,
quarterly, monthly, weekly, or daily.
Should you wish to provide the public with daily updates, we will work
with you to install a script on your network or computer that will upload
your latest GIS parcel layer and assessor’s property database to our
network. As we cannot account for all situations, there may be some
customization time involved, billed at our low hourly rate. |
