Massachusetts State-wide GIS Parcel Maps at MainStreetMaps!

Visit MainStreetMaps
A free mapping website showing property lines and other information for much of the state of Massachusetts went online this month at MainStreetMaps (www.mainstreetmaps.com).  The website, developed by MainStreetGIS, LLC, allows anyone with an internet connection to search for and print property information by browsing an easy to use map interface, or Geographic Information System (GIS).  With recent budget cuts, many towns do not have the funds to make use of and maintain their GIS data under the current software model. MainStreetGIS brings a more affordable, ready-made approach to GIS that allows municipal employees and the general public to begin using GIS today.

Currently, tax parcel data showing lot boundary lines in GIS format is available in the MainStreetMaps system for 199 of the 351 towns in Massachusetts, and that number is growing.  Towns that have chosen MainStreetMaps to host their official online Geographic Information System may have more extensive GIS layers and up-to-date property information than those towns that have not yet selected MainStreetMaps to host an official GIS site.  Regardless, MainStreetGIS expects its online GIS will provide a much-needed service to smaller communities that cannot afford to install and maintain their own internet-based GIS.

Town employees, residents, those working in real estate or conservation, and the general public are invited to view and print Massachusetts town parcel maps by visiting www.mainstreetmaps.com.

"New Web site has detailed information about properties"

The Providence Journal - View Full Article
At www.mainstreetmaps.com, which went online last week, anyone can get information such as plat and lot numbers, lot sizes, and photographs of individual streets.

...By accessing the Web site and selecting the map for Warren, residents can view maps of the town according to plat and lot, road names, zones, or by parcels. Residents can also see photographs of individual streets and buildings through the Web site's aerial photo feature.

...the Web site, which was installed in her computer earlier this month and last week became available to the public, is particularly useful for homeowners or businesses requesting zoning variances for improvements.
Those individuals are required to notify all abutters within 200 feet, which Maher says can be a daunting task. "It can take you a while," she said. Not anymore.

Normally, that requires coming to Town Hall, requesting an application and a copy of the appropriate map, using a compass to identify abutters within 200 feet, making a list of their plats and lots and finding those addresses on the town's database.

Residents then have to make labels and envelopes at home and submit those to the town clerk, who mails the notices.

With the new Web site, which will be installed in the Town Clerk's, Tax Assessor's, Zoning Officer's offices as well as in Public Works Department, notifying abutters now takes a fraction of that time.

"Now I can do it in a minute and a half with one button," she said.

"GIS Implementation Proceeding Smoothly"
Another big step in implementation will be the production of the map books. To help produce these books efficiently, a software tool from MainStreetGIS has been installed. A MainStreetGIS representative spent two days at EnergyUnited helping configure the software and demonstrating the process to produce the map books. Sample maps will be generated and given to field personnel for their feedback. Once this is completed, the new map books will be produced, and the GIS will become fully operational in early summer.
